WITH THE BORDERS RE-OPENING, LET'S TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH A GREAT SMILE!

19th March 2022
According to various studies, smiling is contagious! Smiling decreases stress levels, relax the body, lowers your heart rate and serves as an antidepressant. Smiling doesn't just make you feel better, it also triggers lots of health benefits! Just like happiness, smiles have the power to affect those around us. In fact, the part of your brain that controls your "smile muscles" does so automatically. So smiling can be entirely unconscious, especially in response to someone else smiling at you.
Unfortunately, a bad oral condition can hamper that smile be it due to stained, chipped or misaligned teeth. Read more below to know how you can fix some of the oral problems that can take away that beautiful smile of yours.

STAINED OR DISCOLORATION OF THE TEETH

There are plenty of factors that contributes to the discoloration of the teeth, some of the more prevalent factors includes taking food and drinks that contains artificial colouring, tannic acid particularly in red wine and chemicals called chromogens. Nicotine and tobacco products contains particles that can stubbornly stick to microscopic pores in the tooth enamel. Other factors may include genetics, aging and medication taken. Luckily, some remedies can eliminate stains caused by foods, drinks, or lifestyle habits such as smoking. First, you may rinse the mouth with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution every day or every few days and rinse the mouth with water afterward. Many over-the-counter products can eliminate tooth discoloration as well. A person will usually see results after a couple of weeks, though there is no guarantee. Some options include whitening mouthwashes and rinses containing hydrogen peroxide, whitening toothpastes containing sodium hypochlorite, whitening strips containing carbamide peroxide or tray whitening systems containing carbamide peroxide bleaching gel. However, discoloration caused by other factors such the buildup of tartar or medical conditions may only be treated by a dentist. At Q & M, we will assess the overall condition of your oral health and proceed with the appropraite procedure or treatment in ensuring that the problem is tackled professionally.

CHIPPED OR BROKEN TOOTH

It can really hurt to chip, crack, or break a tooth. The most common teeth to break are the molars of the lower jaw, probably due to their pointy cusps grinding powerfully into the grooves of the molars at the top of the mouth. However, any tooth can break with injuries that range from slight cosmetic damage to serious injuries. Deep cracks can run down to the root or from the tooth's center to the pulp chamber, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. In general, the deeper and wider the damage, the more extensive the treatment needed. At Q & M, our professional dentist/endodontists can perform diagnosis to determine the extent of the damage, depending on the severity of it, treatments may include polishing, bonding, root canal and crown replacement or tooth extraction and implant placement.

MISALIGNMENT OF THE TOOTH

Misalignment of your teeth is called Malocclusion and may lead to oral health complications if left untreated. Malocclusion is usually an inherited condition, this means is it passed down from one generation to the other. However, other external factors that could've caused the condition includes frequent use of pacifier, prolonged use of feeding bottle, thumb sucking, injury to the jaw, and other medical condition affecting the mouth or jaw. If left untreated, it may cause a change in the appearance of your face, frequent biting of your inner cheeks or tongue, discomfort when chewing or biting, speech changes, and breathing through your mouth rather than your nose. Depending on the severity of the misalignment, treatment may include braces to correct the position of your teeth, dental appliances or retainers for realignment, removal of teeth to correct overcrowding, reshaping, bonding or capping of teeth or even a surgery to reshape or shorten your jaw. Whatever the condition that may be hindering your smile especially one that has to do with your teeth, it is always best that you visit a professional dentist to correct the problem. With all that said, keep smiling and enjoy your time travelling when the borders are open once again!
