How to Care for your Teeth This Chinese New Year 2023

18th January 2023
GongXi GongXi! Once again, we are celebrating an auspicious Chinese New Year with new hopes and dreams! Let this new year be filled with laughter, joy and a bright smile. Make sure that you still care for your teeth while enjoying the various foods and beverages this festive season, the last thing that anybody wants is a toothache to ruin the festive mood.

REDUCE YOUR CONSUMPTION OF CERTAIN FOODS & BEVERAGES

Many of our favorite CNY snacks are high in sugar content and some may even be greasy! There's no better way to make them delicious and addictive! For those who are more prone to getting dental diseases, be mindful of how much and how often you are snacking. Be especially careful of snacks that tend to stick on your teeth. Some examples include "Ba Kwa, Nian Gao and Pineapple Tarts". If you have to, remember to rinse your mouth and floss afterwards to make sure they do not linger too long on your tooth surface! Did you know that one of the jaw muscles (the masseter muscle) is the strongest muscle in the body? Although tooth enamel is the hardest tissue in the body, like many other brittle objects, they are not immune to cracks. Some food that can compromise the structure of your tooth are nuts and hard candy. Aside from that, using your teeth to open a bottle, cracking crab shells and chewing on ice can also lead to the loss of your tooth in the long run. Apart from that, acidic beverages typically from carbonated drinks can lead to the production of bacteria, acidic drinks can likewise dissolve the outer layer (enamel) of your teeth. Unlike your bones, tooth structure cannot regenerate and repair itself. So, what is lost is forever gone! Try alternative non-acidic drinks when you're spoilt for choice and if you really have to, use a straw to minimize contact with your teeth. Additionally, try not to brush your teeth immediately after consumption of food and drinks. Do wait for at least 30 minutes before brushing as the outer layer of teeth is more prone to breakdown from abrasive action after an acidic challenge. Another tip is to chew sugar-free gum after meals to help increase saliva flow and neutralize acid.

REMEMBER TO VISIT YOUR DENTIST EVERY 6 MONTHS

Give yourself the gift of a beautiful smile this Chinese New Year. This can be achieved by brushing and flossing regularly, practicing smart oral hygiene tips, and visiting your dentist at least twice a year.
